PMANE leaders to come out of Idinthakarai

The People’s Movement Against Nuclear Energy (PMANE) leaders, who were hitherto spearheading the anti-Kudankulam Nuclear Power Project struggle from Idinthakarai and remained there fearing arrest, have decided to come out on March 29.

As the PMANE leaders S.P. Udayakumar, Rev. Fr. M.P. Jesuraj and M. Pushparayan are all set to test their electoral fortunes as Aam Aadmi Party candidates for Kanyakumari, Tirunelveli and Tuticorin Lok Sabha constituencies, they are likely to come out of Idinthakarai to file their nominations.

An announcement was made in this connection on Monday and fishermen were asked to abstain from fishing on March 29 to give an emotional farewell to the trio.

Though the trio was cited as accused in more than 200 cases including sedition and waging war against the State, the police did not arrest them.

While hearing a case challenging the operation of the first reactor of the KKNPP, the Supreme Court urged the Tamil Nadu Government to consider withdrawal of cases filed against the protestors.

“We cannot do anything with the cases filed against them based on complaints preferred by a few individuals. But, the State Government, after scrutinising the nature of cases filed against them, is likely to come out with an announcement on withdrawing the cases on March 28,” top police sources said here on Tuesday.
