A public interest litigation petition was moved before the Madurai Bench of the Madras High Court on Tuesday against the telecast of Enga Veetu Mapillai , which is currently being aired on the Colors Tamil channel.

The petitioner, Janakiammal, a member of the Southern Districts Women Federation and Adi Thamilar Peravai, said that the show, in which 16 women are seen wooing popular actor Arya in a bid to become his prospective bride, was feudal in nature.

Representing the petitioner, advocate A. Rajini told the court that the very idea of the show was feudal in nature and the women’s interests and their freedom were being highly commercialised. She added that the show was discriminatory in nature.

The petitioner sought an injunction against the telecast of the show. The petitioner also sought criminal action against the channel, actor Arya and programme host Sangeetha for outraging the modesty of women.

A division bench of Justices M. Sathyanarayanan and R. Hemalatha directed notice to the channel and posted the case for further hearing on April 18.
