A public interest litigation (PIL) petition has been filed in the Madras High Court Bench here seeking a direction to Home Secretary and Director General of Police (DGP) to initiate steps for uploading all First Information Reports (FIRs) to the police department’s website within 24 hours of their registration.

When the matter came up before a Division Bench of Justice V. Ramasubramanian and Justice V.M. Velumani on Wednesday, it ordered notice to the officials returnable by two weeks. Advocate V. Kasirajan of Sellur here had filed the PIL petition on the ground that the police should also make optimum use of available technology.

Accusing the police of refusing to issue FIR copies even to the accused, the petitioner said that the issue could be sorted out easily if the police stations across the State were ordered to upload the FIRs to the department’s website. He claimed that such practice would help the accused to take recourse to legal remedy at the right time.
