Plea for setting up AIIMS at Thoppur

March 03, 2015 12:00 am | Updated 05:38 am IST - MADURAI:

The Tamil Nadu Chamber of Commerce and Industry has stated that the Tamil Nadu Chief Minister should demand the Central government to give priority to construction of the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) at Thoppur near Madurai.

In a joint press statement issued here, senior president S. Rethinavelu and president N. Jegatheesan said in 2009 it had been announced that AIIMS would come up on 385 acres of government land at Thoppur.

“There are already super speciality hospitals in Chennai which include the Government Omandurar Hospital providing affordable healthcare. The southern districts, however, are in dire need of such a facility and setting up AIIMS in Madurai would help many people,” they said.

“Among the five places suggested by the State government for setting up the hospital, Thoppur is in close proximity to the (Madurai) airport which will benefit patients coming from various places,” the statement said.
