In the lead-up to the public meeting scheduled to be addressed by DMK treasurer and former Deputy Chief Minister M.K.Stalin here on June 30, AIADMK councillors of the Madurai Corporation have called for prohibitory orders to be clamped on the DMK leader.
They urged Mayor V.V.Rajan Chellappa not to allow Mr.Stalin’s meeting within Corporation limits as he had used derogatory language against Chief Minister Jayalalithaa while addressing DMK cadre at Thiruppalai here on June 5. When P.Salaimuthu, AIADMK Councillor and South Zone chairman, raised the issue at the Council meeting on Wednesday, he was supported by other members who pressed for a Council resolution denying permission to Mr.Stalin to address the meeting.
The Mayor assured the councillors that their demand would be taken up with the police. “The Corporation does not have the right to allow, or deny permission to, the holding of a political meeting. However, we will take your views to the police because Mr.Stalin spoke ill of the Chief Minister and Madurai Corporation at his last meeting,” Mr. Chellappa told the Councillors.
Meeting with Collector
The ruling party councillors also took umbrage at the DMK councillors complaining about the Mayor when they met Collector Anshul Mishra on Monday.
“The members gave a petition to the Collector stating that they were not being allowed to attend Council meetings. How can they be permitted inside the Council hall when they come wearing black shirts? They broke mikes and behaved in an unruly manner. Their conduct was an insult to the Council,” the Mayor observed.
The DMK councillors did not attend the Council proceedings on Wednesday. However, they entered the hall before 10 a.m. to sign the attendance ahead of the arrival of the Mayor, Commissioner and the ruling party members.
During the last two Council meetings in April and May, the DMK members, dressed in black, were evicted from the Council hall.
