Plan for model village

To be set up in every block of Madurai district, says Collector

Madurai district administration has planned to establish a model village in every block of the district.

The Collector, Anshul Mishra, has asked the panchayat presidents to come with their proposals on the model village in their local body.

Inaugurating a reverse osmosis-based drinking water project at a cost of Rs. 6 lakh at the model village of Kottanathampatti near Melur on Saturday, Mr. Mishra said that the basic amenities in the village selected a model ones would be implemented by the district administration.

Interested panchayat presidents could meet the Collector with their proposals on development schemes.

The people of Kottanathampatti were consuming only the salty ground water. Women said that the affordable were buying packaged water for Rs. 25.

The Collector said that the RO-based water project on the panchayat office premises would produce sweet water that would be sold to the villagers for Rs 2 for 18 litres. This was to meet the maintenance cost of the project.

Pre-paid system

People can either drop two one- rupee coins to fetch water or get it through pre-paid system. On payment of Rs. 100, they would be allowed to fetch water through a machine that would read their thumb impression.

The Collector also planted saplings and inspected the anganwadi centre and Government High school there.

The Deputy Collector (training), R. Keerthy Priyadarshini, Assistant Director (Panchayat), Sugumaran, Melur Tahsildar, Vasantha Juliet, Kottanathampatti president, Kanthappan, were among those who were present.
