A public interest litigation petition has been filed in the Madras High Court Bench here seeking a direction to the State Government to constitute an expert committee for formulating strict guidelines for crackers and matches manufacturing units across the State.

The petitioner, K.K. Ramesh, belonging to a private service organisation, also sought for an interim direction to the Health Secretary to provide first class treatment to those injured in the blast at a cracker unit in Mudalipatti village of Sivakasi Taluk in Virudhunagar district on Wednesday.

Monitoring lax

The petitioner, K.K. Ramesh claimed that over stocking of explosive materials, illegal manufacturing of fireworks, violation of licence conditions and failure of government officials to effectively monitor the fireworks industry were some of the reasons for frequent fire accidents in and around Sivakasi.
