Pensioners and treasuries

June 28, 2016 12:00 am | Updated September 16, 2016 04:53 pm IST

All the particulars required of the pensioners have been submitted to the treasuries of Tamil Nadu for 2016 mustering. Hence, it goes without saying that pensioners need not be subjected to such ordeal in future, as the particulars already submitted should be retained for future reference also. The Director of Treasuries and Accounts should issue instructions to the treasuries accordingly.

Children’s park

The children’s park at Chinnamani Nagar, Thoothukudi, is being used for adults. A badminton club is constructed in the middle of the park and a table tennis court is getting ready. But the play equipment like see saw, swing etc are in a dilapidated condition and cannot be used by children. I request the Corporation authorities to repair the play equipment and make the park child-friendly.

Laudable verdict

It is laudable that the Madras High Court has delivered a verdict that while filling the application form for admission to any educational institution it is the option of the candidate to leave the columns ‘caste’ and ‘religion’ blank. This will lead to the temple of learning becoming truly secular and casteless.

More buses needed

The number of buses operated to various destinations in Tirunelveli district does not match the volume of passengers, especially during festival time. This is acute on Anjugramam-Valliyoor route where people have to wait for more than one hour to board a bus. I request the transport authorities to operate more buses on this route.

Spinning mills

Fifty-five years ago two co-operative spinning mills were established in the erstwhile Tirunelveli district — one at Nazareth in Tiruchendur taluk and another one at Tirunelveli Pettai. A few hundreds of labourers in and around these areas worked in these mills in three shifts. Fifteen years ago, the two mills were closed abruptly due to technical problems and all the workers lost their jobs. The present State government is interested in creating job opportunities for the youth in rural areas. Therefore, the government may set up an expert committee to analyse the pros and cons of restarting these mills. If these mills are reopened, certainly they will be a great boon to these areas and a few hundreds of families will be benefitted.

Re-open e-Seva centre

The Tirunelveli Corporation was running a computerised collection centre and an e-Seva centre in its own building at Perumalpuram enabling tax-payers of wards 19, 26 and 27 to remit their property tax and other charges easily.

The e-Seva centre was also greatly beneficial to the public residing in these wards and also others living in nearby areas to get community, birth and death certificates. But these public-utility service centres have been closed and residents are directed to go to the Melappalayam ward office, which is located in a far off place, to remit taxes or get certificates, which causes much difficulty and discomfort.

Further, when they visit the office they are asked to come the next day, citing network problem. When the Corporation has submitted a deficit budget (June 21, 2016) it is not fair on the part of the civic body to close the tax collection centre at Perumalpuram.

Since most of the people living in these wards are office-goers and teachers they have to apply for leave to remit the taxes.

It is the duty and responsibility of the Corporation to see that its citizens are not put to unnecessary trouble while remitting taxes.

Hence, in public interest, it is requested that the corporation should take necessary steps to reopen the collection centre and e-Seva centre at Perumalpuram, duly installing upgraded servers and other high quality computer peripherals to provide uninterrupted service to the public.

Development of Srivaikundam

Srivaikundam is one of the important towns in Tuticorin district. Being the taluk headquarters, it also has many renowned schools and colleges on its periphery. Srivaikundam taluk is enriched by the Tamirabarani. The desilting of Srivaikundam dam should be expedited and the authorities should come out with blueprints for industrial activities in Srivaikundam and nearby areas.

Vehicle

numbers

All motorised road vehicles in India are identified with a registration or licence number.

The current format of registration index consists of four parts. The first two letters indicate the State or Union Territory in which the vehicle is registered and the next two are the sequential number of a district.

The third part is a four-digit number unique to a vehicle. By law, all plates are required to be in a standard format.

Other guidelines include the restriction on fonts. But, in reality, all sorts of fonts are used. In some vehicles, only the last four digits are visible. Speeding vehicles cannot be identified at all.

I request the authorities concerned to implement the rules of law regarding the number plates.
