A parking terminal exclusively for trucks will come up at Maatuthavani in the city.
An eight-acre site located behind the Maatuthavani Omni Bus Stand has been identified by the Madurai Corporation for the project, which will cost an estimated Rs.6.14 crore.
The foundation stone laying ceremony was conducted in the presence of Corporation Commissioner R. Nanthagopal and senior officials on Thursday.
Trucks are banned from entering the city during the day. Said Corporation Zone-2 Assistant Engineer V. Arumugam: “In the absence of a parking bay, trucks park on the roadside hindering traffic.”
The terminal, which can accommodate 200 trucks, will be completed in a year, he added.
A press release issued said the Corporation had allotted Rs.73 lakh for the construction of the terminal.
An additional Rs.49.50 lakh had been set apart to provide rest rooms for the crew.
Nominal fee
A nominal fee would be charged for using the terminal, the officials also said.
