Members of Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly (Public Accounts Committee), led by chairman P.V. Kathiravan, Collector L. Subramanian, MLAs and other officials took stock of the development works and implementation of government schemes in the district on Thursday.

The panel inspected the Primary Health Centre in Sakkimangalam and enquired about the ‘Janani Suraksha Yojna,’ a scheme under which women in the maternity ward received financial assistance. Inspecting the implementation of the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme (MGNREGS) at Andar Kottaram, Mr. Subramanian said de-silting of channels that supply water to the tanks was being given top priority under the MGNREGS.

Officials said there were 200 people engaged in de-silting the Seegangulam tank and that the village had 858 people with valid cards to work under the MGNREGS.

The team also inspected implementation of ‘green house scheme,’ initiated by the State government, in the village and visited the construction site of a house.

The team was shown a ‘poly-green house’ of a farmer near Veerapanjan. Officials from the National Horticulture Mission explained how cultivating cucumbers within a protected environment would result in a higher yield.
