Panchayat chief held on graft charge

The President of Kulamangalam Panchayat, K. Malaichamy (44), was arrested on Tuesday on charges of demanding and accepting a bribe of Rs.1,500 to approve a building plan.

According to vigilance sources, a lawyer, Tirupathi, had approached the president, as he was not issued the building plan approval even after paying the stipulated fee for the local body.

Malaichamy had reportedly demanded Rs.1,500 to clear his application.

After Mr.Tirupathi lodged a complaint with the Directorate of Vigilance and Anti-Corruption wing, Deputy Superintendent of Police Esakkianandan laid a trap and arrested Malaichamy red-handed at his office.

He was remanded in judicial custody.
