More mainstream films should portray the lives of Dalits, said writer Pamaran here on Saturday, while speaking at a felicitation organised by Evidence, a non-governmental organisation, for film director Pa. Ranjith.
He lauded Mr. Ranjith for picturing the lives of the Dalits in his latest movie ‘Madras .’ “For several thousands of years, Dalits continue to remain oppressed in the society. There are very few films that give a glimpse into their world,” he noted. Mr. Ranjith was presented an award for making a movie that will make an impact in the society.
In his address, A. Kadir, executive director of Evidence, stated that the issues of the oppressed and the conflicts among them had been analysed in the film. “Every character in the movie is relatable for the Dalits. The political and social issues addressed in the movie will help people understand Dalit politics,” he said.
Dalit writer Stalin Rajangam has said that ‘Madras’ is not a regular movie, but will make people think about politics and the role of Dalits in it.
Speaking on the occasion, Mr. Ranjith said that caste conflicts need to be abolished and Dalits should develop social knowledge. “Non-Dalits should come forward to abolish caste discrimination and Dalits should facilitate such an opportunity. Educating the oppressed people alone is not enough. We have to raise questions and discuss on issues such as following the ideals of leaders like Dr. Ambedkar,” he noted.
Acknowledging that very few films delved on the lives of Dalits on screen, Mr. Ranjith said his future projects as well will focus on addressing caste related issues in the society. Such movies will spark discussions on resolving issues in the society, he added.
