An omnibus plying without remitting road tax was fined
In a simultaneous check carried out by the transport department officials here on Wednesday, many overloaded vehicles were detained and taxes collected from erring motorists.
Taxi drivers were fined for not wearing the mandatory licence badge and displaying the vehicle number as per norms.
A check on an omnibus revealed that the vehicle was plying without remitting road tax. An on-the-spot tax demand note of Rs.46,975 was issued to the driver.
Similarly, two JCP vehicles, which had also not paid taxes, were directed to pay a sum of Rs.34,975 to the transport department.
Four school buses, which had not adhered to the MV Act rules, were also fined Rs.4800.
Ten goods vehicles and a maxi-cab were stopped for overloading and fines imposed.
RTO (Madurai North) N. Ravichandran said that the teams checked vehicles at Surya Nagar and on the Madurai-Melur NH and a total fine and taxes amounting to Rs.1.25 lakh were collected. Vehicles detained for motor vehicle offences would be released only after the Collector’s order, which would be done only after remitting fines, he noted.
