M. Ayesha Nazira, a one-year-old baby girl, of Seventh Street, Rahmaniapuram in Kadayanallur died of H1N1 virus (swine flu) on Friday evening.

Sources said the victim with complaints of fever and cough was admitted to a private hospital three days ago and referred to a paediatric hospital in Tirunelveli on March 1. Blood sample test taken in a microbiological lab showed positive for H1N1.

It was the second such death caused by the H1N1 virus at Kadayanallur. In the recent past, a seven-year-old boy was the victim of swine flu, sources said. Collector M. Karunakaran said mass cleaning works had been taken up on a war footing in and around Kadayanallur to prevent an outbreak of the disease. Health staff had been instructed to adopt precautionary measures, he added.
