A life-saving surgery was successfully done for a just born baby to correct an emergency congenital anomaly by the paediatric team of Vadamalayan Hospitals in Madurai.

The one-day-old female baby was rushed to the hospital on June 28 and surgery was performed the next day after completing pre-operation stabilisation procedures.

The baby, which was born in another private hospital in the city, was found to have acute breathing difficulty due to Congenital Diaphragmatic Hernia which affected the liver, diaphragm, heart and lungs due to compression.

The three-member paediatric team of Vadamalayan Hospitals- P. Ganesh Prabhu, paediatric surgeon, P. Vinoth, neonatologist and S. Naavarasu, paediatrician- explained the challenging surgery at a press conference held on Friday. Dr. Ganesh Prabhu said that the life-threatening congenital anomaly was surgically corrected and the baby is now normal .

“On admission in our hospital with severe respiratory distress, the baby was put on ventilator support. The baby had a big hole on one side of the diaphragm which is a thick muscular part that separates the abdomen and chest. The congenital disorder had caused severe compression inside and resulted in poor development of lungs,” he said.

Before the surgery which lasted for more than an hour, the baby was stabilised using high frequency oscillator ventilator. “The post-operative phase too was well taken care and this adds to the success rate of state-of-the art Neonatal Intensive Care unit of Vadamalayan Hospitals. The baby has already been discharged from the hospital,” Dr. Ganesh Prabhu said.

Dr. Vinoth said that it is very important to do the right clinical diagnosis since in this case the baby was admitted the very next day after delivery. “We found this as a medically challenging case because the lungs got compressed, but the recent advancements in medical field gave us the confidence to proceed with surgery. It was a good team work,” he added.

The baby’s family belongs to K. Pudur and she was delivered at a private hospital in that locality on June 27.
