An Ayyappa devotee from Tiruchi was killed and 22 others were injured after the van in which they were travelling hit a tree at Subbulapuram on the Tenkasi highway on Friday.

Police said the van driver hit a two-wheeler, lost control of the vehicle and hit a tree. Ayyappa devotees from Tiruchi were travelling in the van. The deceased was identified as C. Manikandan. Among the injured are the devotees and the duo riding the two-wheeler. They were taken to different hospitals. Six of the injured were shifted to Government Rajaji Hospital (GRH) in Madurai.

In the second accident, 11 persons were injured when a van in which they were travelling turned turtle after hitting a median. Police said that a group of people, including two children, from Chennai were proceeding to Tirunelveli. The accident occurred between Kottampatti and Melur. The injured were admitted to the GRH.

2 held for assault

The police arrested two persons in connection with the attack on one Senthil Pandi (33) of Vandiyur on November 12. The police said ‘Load’ Murugan and Sonai, who were wanted for smuggling 26 kg of ganja, were arrested on a charge of assaulting Senthil Pandi. The Karuppayoorani police on November 9 arrested four persons at Vandiyur while they were smuggling the ganja. While ‘Load’ Murugan, Sonai and Udhaya escaped from the police, they suspected that Senthil Pandi had tipped off the police about the transport of contraband that led to the arrest of their accomplices. An armed gang hacked Senthil Pandi, a murder accused, near his house at Sourashtrapuram.
