One killed, 3 injured due to lightning and rains in Madurai

A youth was killed and three others, including a woman, were injured when lightning struck them on Sunday night in the district during rains.

According to police, 19-year-old Marichelvam was struck to death in the lightning near a water tank at Arapalayam. Two others near the area also sustained injuries, police said.

In a similar incident in the city a woman was injured.

Meanwhile, a Sivaganga district report said a 22-year-old youth was killed in Singampunari village after being struck by a lightning.

He was making yarn in a factory when the incident occurred, police said.

A 35-year-old woman, who was also working in the factory suffered injuries in the incident, police said, adding, the factory was totally damaged in the lightning, police said.

Kallandhiri received a maximum rainfall of 86 mm last night, while Mettupatti recorded 50 mm, Thekaddy 30mm, Gudalur 6 mm, Shanmuganathi 16; Uthamapalayam 5 mm, Veerapandi 24 mm Vaigai 20mm, Madurai 19.6 mm and Chittampatyti 47.4 mm, official sources said.

Periyar dam received 185 cusecs of water due to rainfall in its catchment areas.
