Officials of the Nuclear Power Corporation of India Limited (NPCIL) and the Department of Atomic Energy are spreading rumours and creating panic among the communities living close to the Kudankulam Nuclear Power Project, Marumalarchi Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam general secretary Vaiko said on Saturday.
Participating in the ongoing relay fast against KKNPP at Idinthakarai, Mr. Vaiko said that the officials were spreading rumours with the motive of creating panic among the public that there would be serious problems in the reactors if certain maintenance operations, which were discontinued following the protests, were not resumed immediately.
Even technologically advanced countries such as Japan had decided to go for clean and green power while shunning the nuclear power after the Fukushima incidents.
‘Give-up project'
Hence, the Centre should also give up its plans to have nuclear reactors at Kudankulam as the entire southern Tamil Nadu would be destroyed in case of any mishap in these reactors.
Mr. Vaiko also dismissed DAE chairman Srikumar Banerjee's averment that the protest was being fuelled by certain “foreign forces” and the criticism on the Christian priests of encouraging the ongoing protest.
MDMK functionaries K.M.A. Nizam, P.A. Saravanan, S. Perumal and ‘Minnal' Mohamed Ali participated in the fast.
