Sharing their grief with the family members, who lost their dear ones in the police firing on May 22 here, Collector Sandeep Nanduri, accompanied by Monitoring Officer Gagandeep Singh Bedi and others visited the residence of P. Selvasekaran in Sawyerpuram on Sunday.
According to officials, the State government, on orders of the High Court, had enhanced the relief sum from ₹ 10 lakh to ₹ 20 lakh to those family members who lost their legal heirs. The officials said that for people who suffered multiple or grievous injuries, the compensation would be ₹ 5 lakh and for minor injuries, the government would give ₹1.50 lakh.
In a bid to convey the message from Chief Minister Edappadi K. Palaniswami that the firing incident was unfortunate, the top officials also expressed their condolences.
Government job
The government has proposed to give a job to a person from each family on humanitarian grounds.
Earlier, the officers spoke to the family members of Selvasekaran, who had left behind his mother Masanam and two sisters Shanta (51) and Seetha (45).
Even as family members narrated the nightmarish experience they had encountered on the day, when the police had opened fire against the anti-Sterlite rally, they broke down and wept uncontrollably. While they consoled the members, the neighbours expressed their displeasure over the firing.
