More than 300 nutritious meal workers were arrested when they picketed AMC Road before the Central bus stand pressing various demands here on Tuesday.

They demanded that timescale pay should be given to all the nutritious meal employees working for the past 34 years and all vacant posts in noon meal centres filled.

Revision of food grant, pension to retired nutritious meal staff and periodical promotion to them were their other prime demands.

Police have arrested members of Tamil Nadu Nutritious Meal Employees’ Association when they staged a road roko in front of the Union office here on Tuesday in violation of police orders.

Led by association district president K. Manimozhi, the workers launched the agitation blocking traffic as part of the State-wide three-day relay picketing agitation, pressing charter of demands.

All those who were arrested, were released in the evening, police said.

Those arrested included a large number of women workers.

The nutritious meal workers demanded timescale pay, enhancing the monthly family pension at ₹. 5,000 besides increasing the amount given per child for serving food in the noon meal centres.
