The City Traffic Police have joined the Facebook bandwagon. Inspector General and Commissioner of Police Sanjay Mathur launched the FB page of the Madurai City Traffic Police ( >http://www.facebook.com/ madurai city traffic police ) here on Tuesday in the presence of Collector Anshul Mishra and other senior police officers.
Mr. Mathur said that the objective of having the Facebook was to invite suggestions on traffic improvement from people and implement them.
And it would also give a platform for people to interact with the police.
The city had a population of around 15 lakh and a floating population of four lakh. The number of vehicles using the city roads was increasing all the time, but the carriage space remained the same, resulting in traffic management difficulties for the police.
Madurai being a trading and pilgrimage centre, people from across the state and Kerala visit the Temple City every day.
"We have traffic helpline (103), but very few people use this service. I hope the people of Madurai would make use of the Facebook page of Madurai City Traffic Police in a big way," he said.
Thanking the Collector for his initiative in enabling the police to launch the Facebook, Mr. Mathur said that the FB would be handled by an officer from the traffic wing who would respond to queries on a daily basis.

The Facebook would have information on jurisdiction of Madurai City Traffic Police, contact details of officers, one-way traffic system, places where traffic signals were situated, parking lots and fees, proposed diversion routes for agitations and demonstrations , among others.
All information would be uploaded, he said.
In a brief interaction with media persons, Mr. Mathur said that the traffic police would continue to advise people not to travel on footboard.
Shifting of markets
The need to shift vegetable and fruit markets from Yanaikal and South Marret Street to a place near the Mattuthavani Integrated Bus Stand would be examined, he added.
The Collector said that the Transport Department officials collected fines to the tune of Rs. 12 lakh last year from share autorickshaw drivers for violations.
Deputy Commissioners of Police R. Thirunavukarasu and Feroze Khan Abdullah and Assistant Commissioner of Police S. Yellapparaj were present.
