Tirunelveli Corporation distributed 6,300 degradable leak-proof cloth bags and spreads to 50 jamaths of Melapalayam on Wednesday for proper disposal of animal waste during Bakrid.

According to an estimate, over 3,800 sheep and 2,500 bulls are sacrificed in nine wards in Melapalayam Zone of Tirunelveli Corporation as part of Bakrid celebration. Since a huge quantity of animal waste and blood might trigger a health hazard, the corporation started distributing plastic bags and spreads to the residents through the jamaths for proper packing of biowaste and subsequent handing over to sanitary workers.

As the civic body has embarked on an intensive anti-plastic campaign, Commissioner S. Sivasubramanian ordered the distribution of leak-proof degradable cloth spreads and bags this time for packing animal waste. At a function organised at Melapalayam Zone office on Wednesday, 3,800 bags for packing sheep waste and 2,500 jumbo bags for packing bull waste were handed over to the representatives of 50 jamaths by Assistant Commissioner Kavitha and City Health Officer Porchelvan.

Moreover, cloth spreads for sacrificing the animals, bleaching powder to be sprinkled around the spot as disinfectant agent and awareness pamphlets were handed over to the jamath representatives.

“After the animals are sacrificed, we’ve told the jamaths that bleaching powder should be sprinkled without fail immediately after the ritual. Moreover, our sanitary workers will also spray phenyl and diluted lime powder solution in these spots,” said Shahul Hameed, Sanitary Inspector.

After distributing ‘Safe Bakrid’ awareness pamphlets at every doorstep, the Corporation has planned to make an appeal through public address systems mounted in autorickshaws at least for two days ahead of the celebration.

It has also been decided to deploy 310 sanitary workers, 10 tractors and a few earthmovers in Melapalayam Zone on the day of Bakrid to dispose of the neatly packed animal waste.
