The Madras High Court bench here on Friday ordered notice to the Madurai district administration, the superintendent of police and the commissioner of police on a public interest litigation seeking the regulation of ticket fare in cinema houses.
The petitioner, V. Ayyappan of Anna Nagar, claimed that some cinema theatres in Madurai have priced ticket fares between Rs.250 and Rs.500. An order issued by the government on May 20, 2009 had fixed the ticket fare to non-airconditioned theatres at Rs.30 and air conditioned theatres at Rs.50, he claimed.
Mr.Ayyapan alleged in his petition that some theatres flouted the order as the officials failed to conduct periodic inspections and surprise visits to the cinema theatres, he claimed. He further alleged that a few theatres were cashing in on the festival season, such as during Deepavali, to charge exorbitant fees from the moviegoers.
A division bench comprising Justices M. Jaichandren and M. Venugopal ordered notice to the officials and posted the case to next week.
