The People's Union of Civil Liberties (PUCL) has said that neither the political parties nor the people in the State show resistance to casteist forces.
S. Balamurugan, general secretary of PUCL, Tamil Nadu and Puducherry, said this at a public meeting on honour killings at the MUTA hall on Sunday. “None of the political parties in Tamil Nadu had expressed its stance on issues pertaining to caste issues and honour killings. The police department and the legal framework should show sensitivity while handling cases relating to honour killings,” Mr Balamurugan said. He also recalled the incidents of honour killings that occurred in Tamil Nadu in the recent years.
R. Murali, the State vice-president of PUCL, said that most of the victims were women. “Honour killings prevail in most countries of the world. In India they are rampant in States such as Rajasthan, Punjab, Haryana, Uttar Pradesh and Tamil Nadu. Around 8,000 women are killed in the world every year in the name of safeguarding the caste and religion. Until recently, there were no reports of honour killing in Tamil Nadu. Now the situation has changed,” he said.
