Evidence executive director A. Kathir has submitted a petition to Commissioner of Police (Madurai city) that a group of police personnel from the Tallakulam station allegedly threatened him and his staff and demanded action.
Releasing the copy of the petition to media persons on Monday, Mr. Kathir said that four days ago, when a 21-year-old youth and an 18-year-old girl approached his office, claiming to be having an affair and planning to marry, the parents of both the boy and girl, had reservations over the marriage proposal.
While explaining to them that as per the law, the boy and the girl had to be produced before appropriate agencies, which would inquire and accord protection, a large posse of police from Tallakulam station barged into his office and abused the staffs. “Some of them (who were not in uniform) called the staffs by their caste…,” Mr. Kathir said in the petition and demanded action.
As an NGO, when Evidence discharged its duties, the role played by the police in the issue was not only humiliating but also threatening. The Commissioner of Police Shailesh Kumar Yadav has assured to look into the petition, he said.
