Newspaper could act as a teaching tool if efficiently used by teachers, said Ganesh Natarajan, vice-chairman, Velammal Group of Institutions, here on Thursday.
Speaking at the launch of The Hindu’s ‘Newspaper in Education’ programme for the academic year 2017-18 at the Velammal College of Engineering and Technology, he explained how newspapers could be used not only to improve the language of children but also know the world through reading.
Lauding The Hindu for launching an event to inculcate reading habit among children, he also recollected his long association with the newspaper. “Since I was young, my father had made it compulsory to read The Hindu daily and take notes on important happenings. We are now trying to bring that habit among teachers and students in our schools,” he said.
R. Raja Govindasamy, Director, Mannar Thirumalai Naicker College, explained how reading not only helped in improving the vocabulary but also develop one’s thoughts.
Stating that the practice of newspaper reading could help pick up an important habit everyone needed in life, which is reading, he appreciated The Hindu for its crusade to make school children get into the habit of reading.
As part of ‘Newspaper in Education,’ The Hindu would be organising nearly 800 activity-oriented sessions throughout the academic year in around 50 schools with focus on improving reading and writing skills, public speaking, and other soft skills.
