The Corporation plans to bring additional drinking water from Vaigai river to meet the growing demand in the city. To this effect, a project report has been submitted to the State government seeking a grant of Rs.280 crore to lay dedicated pipelines from the river to Madurai city.
Mayor V.V.Rajan Chellappa and Corporation Commissioner C. Kathiravan brought it as an agenda item to seek formal approval from councillors at the council meeting held here on Friday. As per the proposal, the city will get additional 800 million cubic feet of drinking water to meet the needs of all wards. “The city has a population of 16 lakhs in its 100 wards. We assessed drinking water needs for the next three decades. More drinking water supply projects needs to be implemented to meet the demand,” the Mayor said while moving a resolution.
Following a government order issued in December, the Mayor will henceforth be referred as ‘honourable mayor’ instead of ‘worshipful mayor.’ This was communicated to the councillors. Earlier, the councillors passed a resolution thanking the State government for launching ‘Amma cement, which will be sold at a subsidised price of Rs.190 per bag.
