A year after establishing the Vidhyaa Giri College of Arts and Science (VCAS) at rural Puduvayal near here, the Sri Veerasekara Umayambikai Educational and Charitable Trust has introduced six undergraduate courses and two postgraduate courses during 2017-18.
Prof S. Subbiah, Vice Chancellor, Alagappa University, who formally launched the new courses and inaugurated a new academic block at the college on Saturday, lauded the efforts made by the trust and college management for establishing the college in a remote village and offering students, a stream of courses.
The new courses offered by the college were B Sc Physics, Chemistry, Biotechnology, Microbiology, B Com, BA (English), M Sc (Maths) and M Com (Computer Application). The college began with five undergraduate courses in the academic year 2017-17.
Addressing the function, Prof Subbiah said he was impressed by the infrastructure, especially the modern laboratories in the disciplines of physics, bio-technology, micro biology and computer science.
He commended the trust and management for coming out with a clear vision with an emphasis on imparting quality education.
Thanks to the establishment of such colleges in rural areas, Tamil Nadu was in the forefront with gross enrolment ratio of 44% against the all India average of 22%, he said. He appealed to the students to make use of the various facilities available on the campus and build a successful career.
He released the college newsletter and the same was received by V. Balachandran, Registrar (in-charge), Alagappa University. The Vice-Chancellor also released three textbooks authored by R. Swaminathan, College Principal, and they were received by B. Chellappa, Principal, Nachippa College of Arts and Science, Koviloor.
Mr. Swaminathan said the college was established with the objective of empowering the rural youth with knowledge and skills on a par with their urban counterparts.
