A new bridge is to be constructed across Tamiraparani river between Athoor and Mukkani in the district.

The bridge work is expected to start soon, said Highways Department sources here on Sunday.

It would be constructed on an outlay of Rs. 15 crore under the Tsunami Rehabilitation Programme.

It would be built on the existing low-level bridge on the Tuticorin-Tiruchendur-Kanyakumari highway.

Since the bridge is at a low level, at times of heavy downpour, the river swells and the bridge gets flooded and posed a difficulty for vehicles crossing from one side of the river to the other, thus proving to be an inconvenience to the travelling public.

Once the project work started, it would be completed in two years, the sources added.
