District Collector, C. Kamaraj, instructed officials to sink borewells to augment drinking water resource in the reserved panchayats of Pappapatti, Keeripatti and Nattarmangalam.
Mr. Kamaraj inspected the panchayats near Usilampatti along with Project Director, V. Pitchai, and engineers from Tamil Nadu Water Supply and Drainage (TWAD) Board on Saturday following representations on water shortage there.
The Collector said these areas faced water shortage after the source dipped marginally. In some other places, it was due to minor repairs. Mr. Kamaraj said that besides sinking new borewells, extension of pipelines would be done to meet the drinking water requirements.
The panchayat presidents and residents of the villages complained of drinking water shortage. At Keeripatti, a ruling party functionary said that poor quality of water caused jaundice to many residents. The Collector said that new borewells were being sunk in places based on representations. The residents of the panchayats also sought cement roads, free gas connections, old age pension and pattas.
Uthapuram issue
On the Uthapuram issue, Mr. Kamaraj said that he had held a preliminary round of talks with the representatives of both groups of the village near Peraiyur. “I have listened to demands from both sides. The issues would be again discussed next week,” he said.
Earlier, the Collector inspected the construction work of road overbridge at Sellur. He instructed the contractors to employ more number of workers to speed up the work. The work has been scheduled to be completed by September.
“We will review the progress of the work every week so that it is completed by the scheduled time,” he said.
