Industrial development and the tourism sector of southern Tamil Nadu is all set to get a major boost with the inauguration of a new modern integrated terminal building constructed at a cost of Rs. 130 crore at the Madurai Airport, according to the Tamil Nadu Chamber of Commerce and Industry.
Chamber senior president S. Rethinavelu also noted that the Chief Minister had issued order to acquire 610 acres, which has been proposed to be handed over to the Airport Authority of India free of cost, for extending the airport runway to 12,500 feet.
This would facilitate the landing of jumbo jet aircrafts and could improve the prospects establishing a car manufacturing plant in south.
He also recalled the efforts made by the Chamber towards upgrading the Madurai Airport as several of its office-bearers had visited Union Minsters and Central Government officials in the recent years.
They had also interacted with the High Commissions of Malaysia, Singapore and Sri Lanka requesting them to arrange for introducing direct international flights to Madurai. He also expressed his gratitude to the late MP P. Mohan, former MP A.G.S. Rambabu, and present MPs N.S.V. Chithan and Manicka Tagore for the support in realising this terminal.
