A full-fledged integrated National Cadet Corps (NCC) training academy will soon be established at Idayapatti near here. It will have facilities, including shooting ranges, lecture halls, and obstacle courses.
Addressing a media interaction on Tuesday, K.S. Aiyappa, Deputy Director General of Tamil Nadu, Puducherry and Andaman and Nicobar Islands, said “This kind of an integrated set-up will prove effective for camps and training since all the facilities would be available within the unit.”
Around 700 cadets can be trained at a time in this academy. The State government has allocated eight acres for this project, he said. The Madurai group is the largest under the Tamil Nadu directorate with over 24,000 cadets.
The Madurai Kamaraj University and 16 affiliated colleges were one of the first colleges in the country to introduce NCC as an optional elective subject at the undergraduate level, he said.
The Tamil Nadu Directorate, which includes Tamil Nadu, Puducherry and Andaman and Nicobar, is the third largest directorate after Andhra Pradesh and Uttar Pradesh. Commodore Aiyappa said that provisions were being made to accommodate 6,000 more cadets and add to the strength of the directorate.
He emphasized the need to improve soft skills as the need of the hour in the country and said that such courses would be added to the NCC syllabi to make it more wholesome.
Colonel Sanjay Pande, Group Commander, NCC, Madurai, said that Tamil Nadu, Puducherry and Andaman and Nicobar Islands Directorate has six groups and 58 units. Colonel Pande pointed out that Madurai is the largest group in the directorate with strength of almost 24,000 cadets.
