A large number of Muslims, affiliated to the Popular Front of India took out a rally and staged a demonstration in the city on Sunday.
The procession, which culminated at Scott Road, included women also. Various speakers recalled the promise made by the State government a year ago, that the reservation for the Muslims would be enhanced from 3.5 per cent to seven per cent. The reservation should be fair and Muslims would be encouraged on par with other sections in the society. A level playing field would be welcome, they said.
The demands included 10 per cent reservation in all Central government jobs and educational institutions as per the Ranganath Mishra panel recommendations. The Muslims were far behind in many fields that concessions alone would uplift the community, they added.
The speakers included Mohammed Nasrudeen, M. Mohammed Ali Jinnah, K.S. M. Ibrahim and among other PFI functionaries. Volunteers from Madurai, Virudhunagar, Sivaganga, Theni, Ramanathapuram and Dindigul district participated.
The rally was flagged off from Nelpettai. Police had made elaborate arrangements as the processions passed through North Masi and ended in Scott Road.
