Muslims, including women, staged a demonstration in four places in the city and at Melur to condemn the demolition of Babri Masjid on this day in 1992 and demanded the construction in the controversial site.

The agitators had gathered at South Gate, RMS Road, Scott Road and at Nelpettai respectively. Amid a large posse of police personnel, they shouted slogans on those who demolished the historic mosque two decades back. Similarly, in Melur, the Muslims staged demonstration for about 30 minutes, the district police said. In view of the anniversary, the police had deployed their men at many places since Wednesday night. Vehicles were checked on entering the city and as a precautionary measure, parcel booking has been suspended at railway stations till Thursday, a railway police officer said.
