A petty quarrel among neighbours and a family dispute led to two murders — one each in the city and the rural police limits — since Wednesday night.

A 50-year-old woman was hacked to death by her niece over a family dispute in Villapuram here on Thursday. The police said Thangarethina (19) of Kamarajapuram was upset over the last few days after her elder sister Kalaiarasi (35) quarrelled with her husband Selvakumar when she recently came to know about his first marriage.

It is alleged that the deceased, Thangavel (50), mother of Selvakumar, had harassed Kalaiarasi following which she had to leave for her maternal home in Kamarajapuram.

Angered over her sister’s life having been ruined by the in-laws, Thangarethina, a first-year college student in a city college, went to TNHB Colony in Villapuram in the afternoon and quarrelled with the deceased.

Suddenly, she pulled out a machete and hacked her indiscriminately. The woman, who was rushed to the Government Rajaji Hospital, died. The accused girl surrendered before the Avaniapuram police who are investigating.

Anna Nagar murder

In another incident reported in Anna Nagar police station limits, quarrel over rash driving by a mechanic led to the murder of V. Saravanakumar (30) at Karumbalai on Wednesday night.

The police have arrested six persons, including four teenagers, in this connection.

Police said that Saravanakumar, a painter, had questioned a 19-year-old mechanic for rash riding. This led to a quarrel following which the mechanic, who had completed an ITI course, along with five others, including S. Chinnakalai and S. Selvam (23), attacked Saravanakumar and his friend Naveen Kumar at around 10.30 p.m.

While Saravanakumar died on the way to the Government Rajaji Hospital, Naveen Kumar has been admitted there. The police have arrested all the six, including the mechanic, and recovered an iron rod and a knife.

Body of man found

An unidentified body of a man was found at Othakadai near here on Thursday evening.

Police said the deceased must be around 30 years of age. The body was found lying in a bush along the Varichiyur road. It had stab injuries on the stomach.

A cattle grazer noticed the body at 6.30 p.m. and alerted the police who rushed to the spot and conducted preliminary enquiries.

The Othakadai police are investigating.
