Murder accused hacked to death by armed gang

Assailants also hurl country-made bomb

A murder case accused, S. Rafiq Raja (41) alias ‘Vaazhakkai’ Rafiq, was hacked to death by an armed gang at Ismailpuram in Munichalai late on Wednesday night. The gang had also hurled a country-made bomb.

The police said Rafiq was accused in five murder cases – two in Madurai, one each in Madurai rural district, Chennai and Paramakudi. The murder cases registered against him in Madurai were those of Mannar Mydeen (2014) and Yasin (2015) under Vilakkuthoon police station limits. Rafiq, along with his friends, had returned home around 11 p.m. When he was standing in front of his house, a loud blast was heard near his house. As he turned to that direction, an armed gang ran towards him with lethal weapons. After chasing away his associates, the gang indiscriminately hacked him.He sustained multiple cut injuries and died on the spot. His head was mutilated.

Teppakulam police have registered a case of murder. After a post-mortem was conducted at Government Rajaji Hospital, the body was handed over to the family.

The police, who have registered a case against a few persons in connection with the murder, also invoking the provisions of the Explosives Substances Act, arrested four persons.

A statement issued by the city police said that they picked up four persons - Abdullah, Syed Mohammed, Munaf, and Syed Ibrahim - in relation to the case, who reportedly confessed to have committed the murder. The police said that they seized four knives and a country-made bomb from the four detained persons.
