The 75-year-old mother of a construction labourer who died in the Moulivakkam building collapse incident in Chennai on June 28 has moved the Madras High Court Bench here to restrain her daughter-in-law from encashing a cheque of Rs.7 lakh issued to the latter on July 8 as solatium from the Chief Minister’s Public Relief Fund. The petitioner, A. Baby Saroja of Vadagarai Panchayat in Thirumangalam Taluk near here, claimed that government authorities should not have handed over the cheque to her daughter-in-law M. Selvi who, according to the petitioner, had deserted her son A. Murugesan during his lifetime and was living in her parental home for the past six years.

She said it was she who was in real need of financial support following the death of her son. On Thursday, Justice T. Sivagnanam ordered notices to the government as well as Ms. Selvi and adjourned the case to July 15.
