It was a gathering of engineering students in a modest auditorium in the city on Wednesday. Yet, S. Shreeram, a plus two student of TVS Matriculation Higher Secondary School, was the cynosure of all eyes as he walked up to the podium and delivered a motivation address.

In a programme organised by Fortune Pandiyan Hotel, the teenager, who was one of the winners in the international episode of “Iken Scientifica” in 2012, spoke about his passion for science.

He was one of the seven students from all over the world to be chosen as a Global Icon and won a trip to NASA in 2012.

“Identify where your heart lies and pursue your dreams. It was my dream to go to NASA and it became a reality after I made right use of the opportunity that came my way,” said Mr. Shreeram.

“Nearly six lakh students from different countries took part in the competition. After winning the school-level and zonal rounds, I spent time with elders in my family exploring the concepts of electrical appliances,” he also added.

Mr. Shreeram is now familiar with the concepts of appliances such as television, air conditioners, projectors and several others. “I want to achieve more than this. I want to study mechatronics and robotics,” said the shy teenager.

S. Sidharrth, an engineering graduate from Thiagarajar College of Engineering, who has secured a seat in Indian Institute of Management, Ahmedabad, spoke on the different competitive examinations students can write.

“Students should concentrate on improving communication skills and read newspapers every day,” he told the gathering.

M. Manoj Kumar, a final year student of SACS MAVMM College, who attended the programme said, “interacting with young achievers like Mr. Shreeram reminds us that there is so much to do rather than simply focussing on scoring high marks.”

Plan

“I am planning to write Common Admission Test and Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering. This programme gave an insight into how to prepare for the examinations,” he concluded.
