The officials of National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) should take steps to install more caution signboards on the four-lane and prevent accidents, said Superintendent of Police V. Balakrishnan here on Sunday.

After visiting an accident spot on the Madurai-Melur NH, in which a lorry and a passenger vehicle had involved in an accident near Tamaraipatti, he said a comprehensive study of the stretch suggested corrective measures. In this accident, the lorry driver, who was proceeding to Tiruchi from Nagercoil, was drunk and banged a goods vehicle stationed on the curve of the road. Investigations with the passenger vehicle driver showed he was transporting 13 persons against a permit of seven plus one, Mr. Balakrishnan said.

The NHAI should study provide a safe route for the Tamaraipatti villagers as there were at least five hamlets in the locality. It should grow plants on the central medians.
