The Tamil Nadu Small Industries Corporation Limited (TANSI) is undergoing major modernisation works aimed at upgrading it to corporate standards.
This major revamp had already borne results with the State-owned Corporation attracting clients from others States, including Gujarat, West Bengal, Goa and Tripura, and also from private sector, according to G. Sundaramurthi, Industries Commissioner and Director of Industries and Commerce.
Speaking to The Hindu , Mr. Sundaramurthi, who is also the Managing Director (in-charge) of TANSI, said that all its units had been computerised and had his hands full with the large number of orders at present.
Computer designs
The Corporation has now gone for Computer Aided Design (CAD) to come up with new designs for its furniture. It also undertook fabrication and interior decoration works.
The TANSI was able to achieve its last fiscal's target of Rs. 300 crore and was on track to reach the current fiscal's target, which has been pegged slightly higher, he said.
One of the major new orders in recent times was the supplying of 10,000 transformers to the TNEB under the Rajiv Gandhi Grameen Vidyutikaran Yojana, a Central Government scheme that provides free electricity connections to all Below Poverty Line (BPL) families.
Some of the prestigious projects executed by the TANSI include supplying furniture to the new Assembly Hall of Tamil Nadu within a short time. It has also been chosen to supply for the proposed Tamil Nadu Legislative Council, he said.
New orders
While the traditional clients were some State Government departments, Sarva Shiksha Abhiyan (SSA), Tamil Nadu and NABARD Assistance through Directorate of School Education, other State Government departments had been placing orders with TANSI, besides courts, said Mr. Sundaramurthi.
He said that its customers included even the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) as it supplied the Heat Shield for the Polar Satellite Launch Vehicle Project and Precision components, besides fixtures for defence establishments.
The 41 production units of TANSI provided service for various departments such as Irrigation, Agriculture, Health, Judiciary, Industries, Water Supply, Education, Transportation and Social Welfare.
The Industries Commissioner was in the city recently to attend a seminar on MSME schemes and Cluster Development.
