Over 80 IPhones and 13 IPads, worth several lakhs, were stolen from a shop in North Veli Street in the city on Saturday night.

The crime came to light on Sunday morning when the staff opened the showroom for business. Police said though locks on either side of the iron shutters were intact, the one in the centre was broken open. The staffs found the brand new mobile phones had been removed from the boxes. The packing materials were strewn all around the showroom. The police said the showroom was locked at 9.30 p.m. on Saturday.

The burglars had, however, left behind headphones, chargers and adaptors of the phones in the boxes.

Similar incidents of lifting rolling shutters using some iron levers in the centre and letting in those with a slim physique to squeeze themselves through a small opening made in the middle have been reported in the past in the city. The burglars operate inside closed shops using flash lights on their mobile phone and after collecting their booty slip out of the shop in the opening they made.

Deputy Commissioner of Police (Crime) Jayanthi, Assistant Commissioner of Police (Crime-Thilagar Tidal) Periyannan inspected the scene of crime.
