Madurai Kamaraj University has plans to establish a film institute for students on the lines of Film and Television Institute of India, Pune.
“As most of the students from this part of the world who are interested in films go to Pune to learn the aesthetics of film making, we thought we could tie up with the State government and start an institute here”, said Kalyani Mathivanan, Vice Chancellor, Madurai Kamaraj University.
Talking to The Hindu here on Friday, Ms. Kalyani said, “space is not a constraint, we have good teachers and we are ready to tie up with film institutes, film makers and cinematographers. Focus would be on the visual aspects, like cinematography, production design, editing and screen play writing. We have thought about it and we will start discussions with the concerned authorities and plan to bring out a regular school which could go on the long run and could as well pay rich dividends in the future.” The VC also said that she is planning to start a few new courses and said that approval has been given to start 14 new courses; among which there are professional courses for which Madurai Kamaraj University would tie up with industries like hospitals and airlines aiming towards employment opportunities.
“The focal point is from the employment point of view and it is my prime duty to see that Chief Minister's Vision 2023 is achieved. Vision 2023, under its Education and Skills mission, aims to establish a robust human resources pipeline where it aims to increase the enrolment in higher education (including vocational education) to over 50 per cent and to develop skills and train 20 million people with focus on employability,” she added.
