A stabiliser in the Government Rajaji Hospital here caught fire on Thursday evening and it was immediately put out by the staffers.

Dean N. Mohan said that smoke billowed from the CT scan chamber in the Radiology Department as a stabiliser burst at 4.30 p.m.

The hospital authorities rushed the electrical staff to the spot and they doused the minor fire.

“Unfortunately, there were rumours that there was a major fire accident in the hospital and patients got panicky. The stabiliser was switched off immediately,” he said.

Engineers from the Public Works Department and bio-medical staff were on hand to supervise the fire prevention exercise.

Lights which were switched off after seeing smoke were switched on later.

On hearing about the fire, Madurai South MLA R. Annadurai rushed to the hospital and spoke to the authorities.
