A low intensity bomb exploded at Nelpettai, a thickly populated locality in Madurai in the early hours of Friday.

Police said there was no casualty, but a two-wheeler belonging to one Khaja Mohideen, an office-bearer in the Sungam Pallivasal Jamaat, was damaged in the explosion. The bomb detection and disposal squad (BDDS) team arrived and seized two nine volt batteries from the scene of crime.

According to an eye-witness account, the noise originated from the two-wheeler parked in a narrow-lane.

As the explosion occurred very close to the mosque, the police had deployed additional strength in the area.

Preliminary inquiries indicated that the explosion may be the handiwork of some accomplices of ‘Police’ Fakrudeen. The office-bearers of the Jamaat had installed CCTV cameras in the Jamaat, which was opposed to by one group. Vilakuthoon police are investigating.
