Cooperation Minister Sellur K. Raju inspected the new roads laid in HMS Colony of Kochadai on Tuesday. A total of eight roads have been relaid in the area.

The Minister instructed Corporation Commissioner S. Aneesh Sekhar to ensure that water stagnating in the area drained quickly, particularly in Arunachaleswarar Nagar. “The roads are not levelled properly in many areas. Children have to be carried to school during rainy season and it has proved to be inconvenient for residents,” he said.

The Commissioner ensured that the roads would remain stagnation-free as they were now downward sloping. A total of ₹48.40 lakh was allocated for repair work in the area.

The Minister also visited other wards in his constituency- Madurai West- and heard grievances of people. The areas visited by him included Bethaniapuram’s INTUC Colony, EB Colony, Bharatiyar Main Road and Pallavan Nagar. Dr. Sekhar said that in most of these localities, the foundation for roads was in place and tar would be coated as soon as the monsoon came to an end.

To ensure daily supply of drinking water, a tank would be constructed at a cost of ₹27.5 lakh on Mettu Street in Bethaniapuram, Mr. Raju said. A vacant land belonging to the Madurai Corporation would be used for construction of a community hall.

Residents of the ward complained that amenities, particularly roads, were poorly maintained.

V. Parvathy, a resident of Anna Main Road in Bethaniapuram, said that the road had been damaged within three months. .
