An empty mini bus, which was being driven in a rash manner, came to a grinding halt after uprooting a 25-metre-tall electric pole near Sambakulam Main Road here on Monday.

Traffic police said that the bus was being driven to a nearby workshop, when the driver, who was driving in a rash manner, lost control of the vehicle as he applied brakes to avoid a pedestrian. There were some tense moments, before the driver dashed the bus onto the wall of a church after uprooting an electric pole nearby.

On information, Tallakulam traffic (investigation) police rushed to the spot. Preliminary inquiries suggested that the driver had crossed the speed limit as the stretch was deserted.

The driver was also seen talking on his cell phone when the incident happened, the police said. Fortunately, there was no power at the time of the incident and hence there were no casualties, the police added.

Last Friday, a father and his college-going daughter were killed near Maatuthavani integrated bus stand, when a share auto driver knocked the two-wheeler.

The rider lost control and fell on the road with his daughter.

Within a few seconds, a lorry ran over them.

Recent road accidents within the city only show the lack of enforcement of rules by government agencies, motorists said.
