Members of the Southern Railway Mazdoor Union staged a hunger strike here pressing for a charter of demands. The protest was led by the union’s divisional secretary J.M. Rafi. The union voiced its protest against what it termed the railway administration’s anti-labour policy of surrendering posts. They also demanded the railways to provide job opportunities to the wards of railwaymen without conducting any written test for them. Besides, 20 per cent of the appointment in railways through Railway Recruitment Board should be for the wards of railwaymen.

Lifting of ceiling on bonus, implementation of trackmen committee report in totality and rectifying the anomalies in implementation of pay commission recommendations were their other demands.
