December 16, 2014 09:41 am | Updated 09:41 am IST - MADURAI:

Unidentified persons hacked the website of the Sri Meenakshi Sundareswarar Temple on Saturday night, the first time since it was launched in 2001.

The Cyber Crime Unit of the Madurai city police has registered a case under the Information Technology Act.

“We noticed that the website was hacked around 9 p.m. on Saturday, and I lodged a complaint with the police on Sunday,” Joint Commissioner and Executive Officer N. Natarajan said.

Server in the U.S.

The police said the website was designed and being maintained by a private company in the city. The server is located in the U.S.

A police officer said the hackers had masked the home page with some other picture containing a few names of those who supposedly hacked the website.

“It looks like a normal hacking,” an officer said.

However, the data were safe, and the website would become active by Monday night, a source said.

The website has been popular among devotees in India and abroad, offering details of the temple festivals and allowing bookings for special pujas.
