The Meenakshi Sundareswarar Temple here has begun laying clay soil on the floor of its Golden Lotus Tank, where a Rs. 50 lakh project is underway to ensure permanent water storage.

The clay soil has been brought in from Keezhamathur tank, which was selected after soil tests were held. This phase of the work was expected to be completed in another ten days time. After the clay soil, a synthetic membrane would also be laid to ensure water does not seep through.

Officials said that the rain water harvesting system in the temple structures have been spruced up to ensure that rain water flowed without any impediments towards the tank

The project has based on a report from Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) – Madras, which had submitted a detailed proposal on executing this project upon the request of the temple authorities. Ravindra Gettu, a Professor in Department of Civil Engineering in IIT-Madras, inspected the works at the tank recently and reviewed the progress so far.
