With the idea of decongesting traffic on all the Masi Streets, the Madurai City Traffic police have planned to introduce one-way traffic system for two days on an experimental basis from Monday.
Be it peak hour or non-peak hour, vehicles, mostly goods vehicles, used all the Masi Streets for loading and unloading activities, which resulted in reduced carriage space. Road users had made several representations to the police to ban lorries and goods vehicles on these roads and had also suggested one-way traffic system.
After examining the modalities, the police have proposed to convert the Masi Streets into one-way.
According to a press release issued here on Saturday, all vehicles should use the Masi Streets in the clock-wise direction only.
Vehicles coming from the four Veli Streets should take only a left turn on reaching the Masi Streets and not turn to right.
Vehicles proceeding from the Masi Streets to the four Avani Moola Streets or the Veli Streets should also go in the clock-wise direction.
Except for a few changes made in some lanes, traffic on other roads along these stretches would remain unchanged.
Vehicles coming from North Veli Street intending to take West Masi Street, should take West Veli Street, Town Hall Road, Kattabomman Statue, Netaji Road and take a left at Arya Bhavan junction.
Vehicles coming from TPK Road-Hyath Khan Road, Zam Zam Sweet side to South Masi Street shall take Crime Branch, South Marret Street, Mahal Road, Kamaraj Statue and Vilakuthoon.
The police have appealed to the road users to cooperate with them on the two days, the release said.
